Health Care Facilities
Toowoomba boasts a comprehensive range of health and allied community services which, as well as providing an essential service to the community, forms an important element of the local economy.
Extensive health facilities include three hospitals (two of them private), a stand-alone surgical centre and an inpatient mental health facility. These hospitals provide the community with approximately 500 beds, 10 operating theatres and four day surgeries. In addition to this, Toowoomba is home to around 60 specialists with others visiting from Brisbane.

In May 2004, the Federal Government announced new initiatives to help attract more migrants and refugees to Australia's regional areas.
The Department (DIMIA) will place a Regional Outreach Officer in every state and territory to increase awareness of and access to the Skilled Independent Regional (SIR) visa. The SIR visa opens the door to Australia for a group of skilled migrants who are willing to commit to settling in regional Australia for three years, who would otherwise not be able to gain permanent entry into Australia.
The Government has earmarked about 9,000 SIR visa places in 2004-2005 and is willing to provide more if required. There is also a new visa for self-funded independent retirees to encourage them to settle in regional areas.
Toowoomba City Council has actively assisted prospective residents with settlement, skills matching and employment since 1998. Residents have typically originated from South Africa, the Sudan, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Taiwan and China.

As a result, Toowoomba is a major service centre with a relatively large population of both professionals and semi professionals. Both manufacturing and service industries in Toowoomba employ a greater number of people when compared with the Queensland average.

As a joint initiative between The State Government, Toowoomba City Council, and Jondaryan Shire, the Charlton Wellcamp Integrated Employment Area consists of 1,000ha, intended to become the future major industrial area of the region. This area will act as a transport corridor and multimodal freight hub.
It is anticipated that the development will be built to world's best practice utilising the concepts of industrial ecology in industrial processes.
Strategic location at the nexus of the Warrego, New England and Gore highways will allow the area to be a gateway for western, southern and eastern freight - having the capacity to capitalise on its strategic location as a freight and transport terminal of national significance.
