Synopsis
Named after James Cranley who was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in January, 1813. James and his wife, Margaret, arrived in Australia in March, 1853, with their eight children. They made their way to the Darling Downs where James worked as a shepherd and saved to eventually purchase 100 acres on Gowrie Creek near Toowoomba. He named this farm Cranley. From 1864 to 1865, James was a councillor on the Toowoomba Municipal Council. He died at Gowrie Creek on 3 July 1890 after a short illness. Cranley railway station is mentioned in the 1870s near 'The Hermitage', home of Katie and Walter Hume from the early 1870s to 1885. Walter who became Under Secretary for Lands in 1885 would travel to Toowoomba from Cranley Station. The station name probably came from a nearby home of that name.
